I bought the AmScope for my son's 9th birthday. I wanted one that would work well enough to last until college and beyond. Also this scope can be bought with a digital camera and attachment for use with the computer later. It has a lens for oil immersion also, something not found in cheaper scopes for children. This means he can view things that are microscopic in detail and not just fragments of leaves, etc. It works fabulously thus far! It came with two sets of ocular lenses for the eye piece as well, filter and an extra fuse. The oil sent however smelled of pine and leaked all of the bag it was held in. I didn't know it would come with this so I bought the oil online, pure and clear....and does not smell of pine. My only other complaint is there is no instruction manual at all. I do know how to work a microscope so this isn't an issue and I bought a book for kids about the microscope so that's ok for us. All in all we are extremely satisfied with this scope and would highly recommend this to other families! We also bought slides pre-made, blank slides and cover slips so our son could make up his own slides/experiments with my help. I look forward to explaining gram negative/positive concepts to him!
