The Makita Sharpener is a necessity for the serious woodworker. It works like a motorized Japanese Waterstone (which in fact it is). Included in the basic package is a great blade rest that will accomodate most jointer/planer knives and a 1000 grit wheel. You have to practice a bit with the water control knob in order to keep the flow of water onto the wheel at the correct rate, but this is easily done. I recommend that you also purchase a coarser stone for use with removing knicks from your blades; this will save lots of time. One of the best features of this sharpener is that it is one of the few that will allow you to flat grind your edges; other water sharpeners like the DELTA and the TORMEK hollow-grind knives which removes a lot of metal from near the edge. This weakens, I believe, the knive blades when compared to flat grinding. You can also find a great technical supplement for using this sharpener.

Product Description

The Stirling Engine is an External Combustion Engine (the heat source is outside the engine) and can use any available source of adequate heat or cold. It is a classic illustration of converting heat energy into mechanical work using a thermodynamic cycle similar to the well-known Carnot cycle. In this case, however, the engine needs two pistons, a small power piston and a larger "displacement piston" that also stores heat energy. This Sterling engine operates off a burning alcohol lamp that runs a piston. It is an excellent 'toy' for hobbyists or as a serious demonstration model for work or classrooms. All units are tested before shipping.

Basic Stirling Engine Review

This motor came with several spare parts for service and repair. It is good to know that I have these parts regardless if I will need them. This motor is a good model and works very well and would buy it again. In the paperwork that came with the motor states that it runs best with 95% Isopropyl Alcohol however it is difficult to find anything stronger the 90% Isopropyl to which does not burn with the amount of heat need to run the motor. Kerosene works very well however you will need to start the motor by hand after it heats up.
When running I noticed a bit more vibration in the motor then I thought should be there. This vibration did cause the motor to move on the table it is on. I found that the (2) pistons rods were at a angle where they attach to the flywheels, I placed a spacer between the piston rods and the flywheel so the piston rods were stright and true which, allows the motor to run with a lot less vibration. WARN 80010 1000AC Utility Winch Review

I've used a 110v "Superwinch" for about 15 years to raise and lower our 17' skiboat (via marine blocks with a 4:1 purchase and 1/4" halyard line instead of the wire cable). It has been reliable for all these years, but it had one major issue: the grinding noise of the planetary gearset was enough to make the user want to wear earplugs. I actually planned my boat lifting and lowering to times when neighbors weren't outside.

I purchased this Warn winch two weeks ago and installed it last week. Some observations:

(1) This winch is MUCH quieter. It's still above a whisper, but not at all obnoxious.

(2) It is slightly slower, so it takes maybe 40 seconds to raise the boat, compared to 30 seconds for the old winch.

(3) The gear reduction is greater, so the winch does not try to freespin backwards under load as the old winch usually did.

The one nice thing about the old winch was that it had a metal control box that could be mounted to a wall or post. By comparing the wiring diagrams of the two products I was able to re-use the old control with the new winch. Don't try this if you don't know what you're doing.

Duo Fast EWC5018A 20 Gauge 1/2-Inch Crown Electric Stapler Review

I've had one of these for many years and it's worked fine. It is (or was at the time) very hard to find power staplers that are not pneumatic and this does the trick. Duo Fast does not seem to make it any more and they seem to sell something else that has staples that have a less-wide "crown". This one takes 1/2" crown (width) staples of a variety of sizes and is very good for light duty stuff like upholstery, putting up wire, etc. BTW, they seem to refer to it as an "electric tacker" rather than a stapler.
