Being an industrial (IBEW) electrician, I have fallen in love with the first battery operated band saw that can give the "plug ins" a run for the money. This item is powerful, cuts 4" pipe with little to no trouble, and the LiIon battery is very impressive in the longevity department.

I just wish it was available in a "softside" bag instead of the hard case container it comes with (as it takes up a huge amount of room!).

Breckwell Pellet Big E Exhaust Combustion Motor w/ Gasket A-E-027 - 10-1114 MFR Review

A member of my family was in the electric motor business for a number of years and I will relay what we found out from the motor builder.. The sleeve bearings gum up after a few hot years of pellet stove use and slow down the rotation to the point that the motor will not spin up on it's own. Or no start.. This is a Fasco motor and in the last 10 years they stopped providing ports to direct oil into the small sleeve bearings. We contacted Fasco and talked to one of the engineers. The canned Fasco response is that people were putting the wrong oil in the motor oiler ports and dissolving the wiring which can and will happen with common detergent oils. Yes, this can happen but even the wrong oil is better than no oil at all in most cases in my opinion in this application. We could argue about fire hazard and such but I'm not going there.. Lets just use the proper oil..

The proper paraffin base, turbine oil, non-gumming, high quality, all purpose lubricating oil 12 pack is sold right here on Amazon for a great price. Also it's on E-Bay for about $4 a bottle at times. If anybody has any links to quarts or gallons post them here, thanks.

12 each: Zoom-Spout Lubricating Oil (ZS75A)

This Zoom non conductive mineral oil has been around for years and is the mainstay of most electric motor shops. Eight or ten of these 4 ounce oil bottles will fill a small container big enough to completely submerge the whole Fasco motor. After removing the motor from the stove let it soak in the container for 2 days or so and rotate it once in a while to work the air out of the bearings and housings. The oil needs time to soak into the bearing metal and surrounding areas so as to provide future lubrication for the shaft and wear surface in the bearing. A free spinning combustion motor will run cooler and use less power which is an additional benefit to stove operation. This proper oil will not hurt the motor field or armature wire. Blow the excess oil from the motor housing with compressed air before installing back into the stove.

I have two Breckwell pellet stoves with the original Fasco motors that have been in use for approximately ten years with only one oil treatment in that time period. It sure beats paying $200 or more for a combustion motor every few years. You can also do the same treatment to the upper convection motor with sleeve bearings. The new convection motors are ball bearing type but are much louder than the sleeve type bearings. I prefer the sleeve bearing convection motors as we sleep in the same room with one of the Breckwell pellet stoves.

Love this thermostat.

I have it coupled to Honeywell's Red-Link Gateway (also available on Amazon) which plugs into my interent router. This allows me to adjust the thermostat from my smart phone! Who cares?

Well, I work in a sometimes-chilly office above my garage. I used to have a thermostat set on a timer but it never quite fit my erratic schedule -- it would turn on when I had to be at a meeting; it would turn off when I wanted to do some early-morning work. (OK, clearly the problem was with ME, not the old thermostat, but you get the idea).

Now whenever I'm ready to work I can go on my smartphone, say, when I wake up, and by the time I've brushed my teeth and gotten dressed, my work space is already at the right temperature. Yahoo!

Tech support on the phone is good. Gave this four stars instead of five for a minor reason -- if you have simple tech questions the Honeywell folks are happy to help. But any question beyond the basics and Honeywell insists that they will only talk to a licensed installer. For all you licensed installers out there I certainly respect your talent and expertise, but the crankier part of me is thinking, "I paid for this thing - why can't I ask a question?" For example, to perform certain functions you need a passcode, which is hidden on the unit. (Sorry; if I remembered where it is I would tell you!) My friend is a licensed electrician and so was able to speak their language but I still find it a bit annoying. Of course I think that if you just said, "I'm Joe of Joe's Electrical Service" you'd be fine, still...

Cold Steel Laredo Bowie Faux Cocobolo Handle Review

I'm a big fan of bowie knives, especially Cold Steel's. The first CS bowie I acquired was a Trailmaster. I bought my TM back when CS was still making their knives in the US and using Carbon V steel. I'm not exactly an expert on types of steel, but the Carbon V TM was an outstanding knife with incredible strength and edge retention. After carrying it for about five years I decided to try another Cold Steel bowie knife. I'd heard nothing but good things about the Laredos and I really liked their more traditional styling, but when I saw that CS had switched to the new SK-5 steel and was manufacturing out of Taiwan, I was a bit skeptical. Still, I've never bought a CS product that I didn't like, and so decided to give it a go. I wasn't disappointed.

BLADE: SK-5 Steel - At 10&1/2 inches this is one big blade. It is elegantly shaped and flat ground with a beautiful satin finish. It comes out of the box quite sharp, passing both the paper slicing test and the arm shaving test with ease. The blade isn't quite as sharp as my Cold Steel Ti-Lite or Hatamoto, but that makes sense considering this is a large fixed blade meant for heavier work like chopping and batoning (two things it does very well), however a few minutes with a fine stone and this thing could be ready for surgery. One of my biggest questions when I acquired this knife was whether or not the new SK-5 steel could stand up to the same rigors as the old Carbon V. After carrying the Laredo for over a year now, I'd say that the new steel measures up. It doesn't *quite* have the same resilience and edge retention of the old Carbon V knives, but for all intents and purposes, at least my intents and purposes, the difference is negligible.
One of my favorite features of this blade is the long false edge. That thing can really do some damage on a back cut. Cold Steel advertises the false edge as sharpened, and it will definitely take a chunk out of whatever you decide to whack with it, be it flesh, wood, or otherwise, but isn't sharp enough for actual cutting. Still, if so inclined, one could easily put a fully functional cutting edge on it with minimal effort. In my opinion it's fine as is, but it's nice to have the option.
The spine of the blade is quite thick at 5/16", making for one hefty chunk of steel, however the main edge and the false edge meet to form a very sharp point, so despite its weight this knife is far from dull or clunky, with excellent piercing power. The considerable heft makes it a good chopper, and the thickness of the blade makes it strong enough for some rough batoning.

GUARD: The beautiful brass guard both adds to the traditional look and feel of the Laredo, and does a good job of keeping your fingers safe from the cutting edge. Unless you're willing to spend a good amount of time polishing it every week, it will eventually aqcuire a patina, but personally I find this aesthetically pleasing.

HANDLE: Here we find a place where aesthetics and practicality are somewhat at odds with each other. The Laredo's wooden handle is gorgeous, but its smooth finish makes it less than ideal in the grip department, especially when wet. This problem is easily solved with hockey tape or something similar, but such an addition would detract from the overall look of the knife. Fortunately, the brass guard provides a good measure of protection. I suppose one could carve out some grooves and re-finish the handle, but for my purposes it's fine the way it is.

SHEATH: The Laredo's sheath is the one aspect of the whole package that doesn't thrill me. Don't get me wrong, it's well made, and matches the knife's look and feel, but it's just so bulky. The thickness of the sheath is especially problematic considering that the Laredo is meant for IWB carry. You might find yourself having to loosen your belt a notch just to fit it in. I was fortunate enough have my Laredo fitted with a custom concealex sheath from an expert sheath maker (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to drop names in a review, but anyone who is interested please drop me a line and I'll point you in his direction). With the thin, light concealex sheath I'm able to slip the Laredo into my belt easily, making concealed carry a breeze.

The Cold Steel SK-5 Laredo Bowie is a 5-star knife, no doubt about it. The sheath system might be a little bulky for some, but the knife itself is a thing of beauty, and a great tool. Get it, you won't regret it.
