This nailer works great. If the tool fails to fire or jams frequently (if you read other reviews you'll read about complaints of this happening, where they drepress the nose several times and then it works for a while, etc): CHECK THE EXPIRATION DATE ON THE FUEL CELL.
An expired fuel cell will make the tool malfunction randomly (drive 3-5 nails, not work, drive 3 more then not work or jam, etc). Creating huge amounts of frustration.

I have a set of Impulse nailers (framing and trim) and both worked flawlessly when I first bought them. I use them for home projects, that is, it can be a year or more before I use it on another project. Last year I started a new project and the framing nailer started not firing after driving 3-5 nails. I cleaned, oiled and cleaned again with temporary results after a few nails. The "usual procedure" is to depress the nose 10 times on the trim and at some point it starts firing again. Needless to say frustrating enough to make you want to buy a corded tool.

Four days ago I started working on trim, and the finish nailer started behaving the same way. Finally mad as heck I contacted paslode, and they told me to check the expiration date on the fuel cells. Sure enough, both of them were over 18 months expired. I replaced the fuel cells with a new one from the store, and wham, works without hessitation. I offloaded about 100 nails with each nailer and not a single misfire.

[this is now a year from my original post - and both nails run like champs. Never again have they failed to misfire]

I would have rated this as a 5 star, if the manual would have suggested to check the expiration date of the fuel cells. Alas, it is possible that mine didn't say this because I bought mine over two years ago, and they had recently introduced the nailers.

First off, Order the base....It makes this item that much better in comfort...

This diamond sharpening system comes with 3 stones. Coarse, fine and extra fine. It is well made and not flimsy at all. I was able to get a hair shaving edge off a buck knife that was badly damaged. It took some time working up a burr with the coarse stone, but again this knife needed alot of help. Once you find the correct angle using the marker trick, its simply moving the stone across the bald and making sure you have a burr over the entire blade. Flipping the blade to the other side( the blade does not leave the locking mechanism, you just twist it 180deg) Overall i really like this. I have already ordered the extra coarse stone, since i have some very neglected blades but evenm the base kit is worth it...

Mayhew Pro 66002 1/8-Inch to 2-Inch Imperial SAE Hollow Punch Set Review

If you're unfamiliar with this type of punch and don't understand exactly what's meant by descriptions like "dual-head," just enlarge the Amazon photo showing the handle with two cutting heads attached and you'll get an idea of what makes this punch set unique. This exact same 27 piece kit (25 cutting heads + handle and mandrel) is sold in the U.S. rebranded under other names besides Mayhew -- such as AllPax (100K27) and Allstate (KP-100K27-AG) -- and at wildly differing prices peaking at over seven hundred dollars. They're all made by Boehm in France, which sells them in Europe under their own name, this particular kit being Boehm item number JLB350US. The "US" designation at the end is a nod to the fact these punches are made in imperial inches per U.S. preferences. Boehm also makes sets in metric sizes which are carried by some U.S. retailers under various distributor's names. The dual, interchangeable cutting head design is supposedly patented, although I can find no mention of a patent listed anywhere on the items. I only mention all this for those who may be comparing identical-looking kits under different manufacture's names online and wondering if there's a difference between them. There's not. Boehm apparently has a monopoly on the dual head design; patent number or no.

For the record, Boehm manufactures one U.S. kit that's more complete than this, containing 34 cutting heads going up to 2 3/8" (Boehm item no. JLB260MTRUS -- or Mayhew 66016, which differs from the Boehm version only in that it doesn't include a separate centering pin). I couldn't find the larger kit at a reasonable enough price to justify its purchase, but no matter: the 25 cutting heads included with this kit should be sufficient for the majority of the cutting needs most of us will ever encounter. Some retailers selling these kits also sell the additional 9 punches separately if you want the complete set of imperial sizes, but they're pricey: around forty dollars each.

Okay, down to business. First off, although the cutting heads appear to have a shiny chrome-like finish in the picture used here and elsewhere (at least at the time of this writing), the finish is in fact black oxide, and oiled. I have no idea what grade of steel the heads are made of, let alone where they'd fall on the Rockwell hardness scale. The best I could find was the description "high-resistant steel" on Boehm's website, so we can reasonably assume it's some sort of alloy. They appear to be quite well made; I could find no imperfections with any of them. All are sufficiently sharp and stout enough to withstand some punishment.

The chrome-plated handle and mandrel are beyond stout -- they're bomb-proof! Weighing in together at almost 2 lbs, they're built for abuse. The mandrel which the cutting heads attach to -- that's the cone-shaped, ridged item you see in the picture -- screws onto the end of the well-knurled handle. Boehm makes some punch kits containing fewer and smaller cutting heads, and those kits come with the mandrel pre-attached to the handle. To do that with a mandrel capable of handling 2" punches would have resulted in a storage case incapable of fully closing and making stabilizing contact with the punches, so the mandrel is separate and lays flat in the container for these larger kits.

This kit comes with no instructions because none are required. Once you screw the mandrel to the handle, attaching the cutting heads is easy. The cylindrical mandrel has four different levels of circumference, each with a shallow groove in its side allowing the cutting heads to attach with just a quick turn. Because the base on most of the cutting heads falls within four different sizes, they're able to attach to a mandrel that accommodates only four different sizes. The exceptions are the five smallest punches, which screw into a threaded opening in the mandrel's center. Because these five smallest punches -- which are 1/8" - 3/8" -- can only occupy the same threaded center, you cannot cut washers of a size that requires more than one of them. All of the threaded items worked smoothly together - no tight spots. The handle screwed into the mandrel with ease, as did the smaller punches into the mandrel's center.

Once you've selected and attached the cutting head or heads it's just a matter of giving the butt of the handle a good whack with a hammer to cut your gaskets, washers or solid disks. Although this can be done with any hammer, I highly recommend using either a non-metal, shot-filled dead blow or regular soft face hammer of at least 24-ounces for precise impact and to prevent peeling chrome from the handle. For thicker materials -- especially rubber -- a hammer heavier than 24-ounce will be required. A vinyl cutting mat is also recommended. If you use wood to absorb the blow its fibrous nature will be rougher, over time, on the cutting heads sharpness, as well as likely contributing to some unwanted flaring with your cuttings due to most wood's softness. Most rubber mats could introduce similar flaring problems because of softness. So for the cleanest cuts and maximum cutting head longevity a vinyl cutting mat that's at least 3-mm thick (beware of ultra-thin Olfa mats!) and around 8-1/2" x 12" is all you'll need to handle all your hollow punching needs.

One gripe about this kit (besides the steep price): While the polypropylene molded storage case is nice enough, for some puzzling reason the red interior compartment that holds all the pieces has been molded out of ultra-cheap polystyrene; one of the flimsiest plastics available. Even the clear plastic used for the throwaway "clamshell" packaging on new goods -- usually PVC, but more recently PET -- is of much better quality than polystyrene. Whether this was Boehm's call or the re-branders I can't say, but whoever was responsible made a poor choice - poor enough that I've docked the kit one star in my rating. Polystyrene is fine for cheap children's Halloween masks, but a tool kit of this cost and quality deserves a more durable interior.

Like most specialty tools of this type it's overpriced. Although I had to swallow hard before laying down the cash for it, I can already see it's a purchase that pays for itself over time; its uses for fabricating and repairing are unlimited. Its ability to cut interior and exterior portions of washers and gaskets simultaneously have made it invaluable; most recently for some washers cut from teflon that have allowed an automatic dishwasher's spray arms to once again spin freely. I'm using it for numerous other jobs I've been putting off because of the time, frustration and wasted material that frequently result from attempts to create perfect gaskets and washers with a standard punch equipped with a wobbly, spring-loaded centering pin. If you're a DIYer you can't go wrong with this -- it'll outlast you. Cheap polystyrene interior excepted, of course.

Postscript: After writing this review Grip-On Tools released its model 61080 hollow punch kit, which is considerably less expensive than any other dual-head 27 piece kit I've seen. Put "grip 61080" in the search field here at Amazon or Google to find it. Having never seen the Grip kit I can't vouch for its quality, but given the price difference it may be worth taking a chance on if this is an item you'll only put to occasional use.
