Mighty Vue Magnifying Lamp Finish: Black Review

This lamp seems expensive compared to much of the competition. In fact it's nearly twice the cost of the name-brand and almost iconic Ledu/Luxo lamps. But there are reasons.

I have a Luxo lamp for comparison. This lamp is far superior and worth the price.

The tension springs are hidden in the mechanism, hold the lamp in any position (even at the extremes of the extension range) with very little backlash, and make no noise - you could use this same mechanism for a desk microphone boom without worry.

The lens is large enough to be looked through easily with both eyes - no sacrifice of binocular vision - and is much more comfortable to use than the typical five inch round lenses. The lens has very little distortion, even at the edges, further increasing the usable area. Illumination is very even and uses modern CFL bulbs.

Highly recommended.

Edit - added:

Something else to consider: This lamp (like some others) has a three diopter lens. Others have a five diopter lens. The three has less magnification. But it also is more comfortable to look through and allows a greater distance between the lens and whatever you're looking at. That the five diopter lens allows less working distance and is less comfortable is NOT the lamp or lens maker's fault - that's just how optics work.

If you are dealing with e.g. seed beads or what I'll call "routine" electronics, the three diopter lens is probably what you want. If you're working with the smallest SMD electronic components, you probably want to at least consider the five diopter lens. (But I doubt you'll be able to get an SMD rework tool between the lens and the board you're working on...) The ideal lamp would have a zoom lens. :) Failing that, the ideal bench setup would have two lamps, one of each mag. I don't have room for that, so I settled for the three and use a headband magnifier when I want more. Anyway, you pays your money and you takes your choice.

Starrett 9-12-4R 12-Inch Quick Read Combination Square Set with Cast Iron Head Review

It was tough for me to break down and spend the money on this Starrett combination square, but I am so glad that I did. I have used a few different combination squares in my 22 years of woodworking; Starrett has always proven to be the most accurate and last the longest.

I bought a $40 square several years ago and noticed it was just a little off from being square. When I put the Starrett square against my $40 square, you can really notice the difference of how far off my cheaper square is. I compared the Starrett square with my machinist protractor and they matched up. So I checked all the squares in my shop with the Starrette and all but one were off by around .75 degrees. I know they were not perfectly square before checking them, but it is now very nice to have something that is perfectly square so that I can properly set my machines.

This item arrived without an oil protective coating. I like that since I don't like to have to do a lot of cleaning before using a tool. Before I used it, I applied a good coat of Renaissance wax to help the parts slide well and protect it from rusting. This method of protecting my metal tools has proven very good in my high humidity environment.

The ruler has a satin finish and the lines/numbers are engraved. It is very easy to read and the lines are very thin so you can get precise measurements (unlike stamped or CNC'd rulers).

The adjustment knobs are also very easy to handle compared to my other squares.

The square arrived in a quality plastic case with cut foam inserts for each of the pieces.

I read the only review of this product before I ordered mine.. and the previous reviewer seems not to like his... so with a slight amount of trepidation I ordered a shear of my own.... ( I already own the 18 guage version and the 16 gage additional head) I am currently working on a project covering skateboard ramps with 14 guage steel to protect them from the elements... I didn't think my 16 guage shear was going to be long for this world using it on the heavier metal...So I got this one... It is doing an awe-inspirng job.... I have used in the past the shears with two jaws... like the Bosch and the Dewalt....and for doing tight radius' they are great... but these cut straight lines effortlessly and will do larger radii quite well. On a skate ramp 5 foot radii would be tight... I am thoroughly satified with these shears and would highly recomend them to anyone...The Variable speed option is great.... I didn't think I would care about it....I would however ..based on my previous experience with Kett products, get a spare set of teeth (jaws?) because surprizes happen... All in all I'm very happy.. I would also reccomend the metal case... It's a handy place to keep your spare cutters and the grease...

Senco FinishPro 11 23-Gauge Micro Pinner Review

I am an experienced finish carpenter & am VERY disappointed with this gun. Don't even think of using this gun to shoot 2" pins in any wood (not even pine). It will leave the nail sticking out every time. The only way it sets the nail is if you push hard while nailing which then leaves a dent in the material and renders the use of a 23ga nail pointless. They had the same problem with their 1" pinners & solved the it with a replacement driver that did fix the problem. I've spoken to other people who also have this gun & they have the same problem from day 1. The Grex is $100 more but well worth it. It effortlessly sinks the nails in!

TOPS Knives Damascus Mini Tom Brown Tracker Knife TBT DAM 4 Review

This knife is a lot smaller than I thought it would be but it's size is just right for the certain applications that it was intended for such as fine wood carving and bushcraft. I think it was made to be more of a compliment for any of it's bigger brothers in the Tom Brown Tracker knife series. The Damascus pattern is very nice and the leather sheath is a beauty, though, I had hoped for additional mount options. I may order the standard version's Kydex sheath for better carry options. Overall, it's a great knife that won't disappoint.
