Mighty Vue Magnifying Lamp Finish: Black Review

This lamp seems expensive compared to much of the competition. In fact it's nearly twice the cost of the name-brand and almost iconic Ledu/Luxo lamps. But there are reasons.

I have a Luxo lamp for comparison. This lamp is far superior and worth the price.

The tension springs are hidden in the mechanism, hold the lamp in any position (even at the extremes of the extension range) with very little backlash, and make no noise - you could use this same mechanism for a desk microphone boom without worry.

The lens is large enough to be looked through easily with both eyes - no sacrifice of binocular vision - and is much more comfortable to use than the typical five inch round lenses. The lens has very little distortion, even at the edges, further increasing the usable area. Illumination is very even and uses modern CFL bulbs.

Highly recommended.

Something else to consider: This lamp (like some others) has a three diopter lens. Others have a five diopter lens. The three has less magnification. But it also is more comfortable to look through and allows a greater distance between the lens and whatever you're looking at. That the five diopter lens allows less working distance and is less comfortable is NOT the lamp or lens maker's fault - that's just how optics work.

If you are dealing with e.g. seed beads or what I'll call "routine" electronics, the three diopter lens is probably what you want. If you're working with the smallest SMD electronic components, you probably want to at least consider the five diopter lens. (But I doubt you'll be able to get an SMD rework tool between the lens and the board you're working on...) The ideal lamp would have a zoom lens. :) Failing that, the ideal bench setup would have two lamps, one of each mag. I don't have room for that, so I settled for the three and use a headband magnifier when I want more. Anyway, you pays your money and you takes your choice.
