Product Description
Random Orbit sanders are hard to beat for a swirl-free finish, but there are occasions when a true Orbital action sander is a better choice. Unlike Random Orbit sanders, direct-drive true Orbital sanders are not prone to gouging upon start-up or removal from the work surface, making them ideal for careful detail sanding of corners, rabbets, curves, or other complex surfaces. This sander features electronic variable speed control so you can match the sander performance to the material and abrasive in use. This sander includes a provision for connection to a 27mm Festool dust extraction hose (optional) for virtually complete collection of sanding debris. The more traditional rectangular-shaped pad of the RS 400 E makes it ideal for finish sanding of panels, frames, doors, and other cabinet carcass work. Made in Germany. Includes: RTS 400EQ Sander, Sanding Pad, Filter Cartridge, Abrasive sheet, Power Cord and T-LOC Systainer #1 Storage Container.Festool 567863 RTS 400 EQ Orbital Sander Review
This is the fourth Festool sander I have purchased, and the smallest so far. This is a rectangular pad, orbital sander that is terrific for fitting into small spaces, sanding small surfaces like table legs, and for finish sanding.
The Festool system makes sanding tolerable. I build furniture as a hobby, and sanding is my least favorite part of the process. Because of the built-in dust collection port, connecting it to a good shop vacuum ( I use a Fein, but Festool has great ones, too ) means virtually no sanding dust left on the surface you are sanding or in the air. There are holes in the sanding pad, and corresponding holes in the sandpaper, that allow the vacuum to suck up the dust as it is created, right off of the surface. Unless I'm using a very aggressive, larger sander, I don't feel the need for a dust mask.
This one is light, so it is easy to use for a long time. It is also reasonably quiet.
While not cheap, it is well worth the extra expense over other sanders of this size due to how efficient and clean it is. The prices on Festool products are established by Festool, so unless you find one on the secondary market, i.e.: used, you don't have to worry about whether you found the best price on line or in a store. The only other drawback is that only Festool sandpaper works with the dust collection system, because of the holes that are put into the paper to match the hole in the sander's pad. Again, the paper isn't cheap, but it is high quality and lasts. I use the new Granat paper for everything from stripping finishes to bare wood. It doesn't load up if you are stripping an already finished surface.
I haven't found a Festool product yet that isn't worth the investment. This is another that does it's job very well.
