Silver Stag Elk Stick Series Frontier Fighter Hunting Knife D2 Tool Steel Review

I was in the market for a stag handled hunter's Bowie/fighter that was made in the USA (yeah, I'm one of those guys that still cares). I was depressed to find out, after a lot of research, that the vast majority of such knives, from most of the decent makers, are made in China. I had never heard of Silver Stag, and there really wasn't much in the way of information about them on the Internet. I checked out their website and saw that the knives are made in Washington state by a bunch of guys that seem to really take pride in their work. So, I gave it a shot and ordered the Frontier Fighter. I'm so glad I did. I think I audibly said "wow" when I took it out of the box even though there was nobody else in the room. The knife is about the same size as a full size Ka-Bar, but slightly heavier. The D2 tool steel blade is WICKED. Shaving sharp out of the box with a tip that I think could probably pierce a car hood. The elk antler handle is highly polished with subtle finger grooves. Fit, finish and workmanship on the entire knife is flawless. Pure quality. This is the kind of knife you'll carry till you die and then pass down to your kids, its that sweet.

I'm sure this knife, though a fighter, could easily handle almost every reasonable chore you'd have in a hunt camp. I don't know if you could baton thick wood with it (you probably could, but thats what axes are for IMO), but wow what a cutter. I bought this knife strictly from a last-ditch self defense perspective. Where I hunt we've had problems with packs of aggressive feral dogs and increasingly aggressive packs of coyotes as well. Not to mention the occasional poacher. As such, I want a good fighter on my belt when I hit the woods, just in case. This knife fits the bill perfectly.

I only have one minor criticism, and if the guys at Silver Stag read this I want them to know that it's purely constructive criticism: The elk handle is so highly polished that its very smooth, and the finger grooves were spaced a little too far apart to fit my medium sized hand. With a knife billed as a fighter, there should be a handle with a rougher grip for more hand traction, and I'd ditch the finger grooves. I would also put a slightly bigger guard on it. Looking at other Silver Stag knives, I would think that a less polished crown antler handle would be perfect.

The sheath is a brown leather pouch sheath that can be worn on the belt either horizontally or vertically. The leather is nice BUT...theres no blade guard in it so the first time I pushed the knife into the sheath, the acute tip of the knife went right through the bottom, cutting the stitching which immediately started to unravel. C'mon guys, a knife this nice should at least have a sheath with a basic blade guard in it. However, I always buy a knife for the knife, not the sheath (I'm not a fan of pouch sheaths anyway).

Despite the handle & sheath issues, I still have to give this knife 5 stars. I'm going to have a custom sheath made for it because I plan on having it for a long time. It really warms my heart to see such a beautiful, American made knife. Holding a knife like this, a true work of art, will really drive the point home as to how much Chinese made junk is out there on the market now.

As a former marine and avid, lifelong hunter and outdoorsman, I've had a fighter on my belt for over 30 years. I finally retired my beloved but exhausted Ka-Bar, and the Frontier Fighter will be taking its place. Its a superb blade, and I'll wear it with confidence. I will definitely be purchasing another Silver Stag knife soon.
