I'm still not sure how I truly feel overall about this knife; but I must say that it stood up to every cutting, slicing and chopping task I put it to. My first time afield with the ESEE 5 was on a deer hunting trip so the need for the glass breaker or fire-drill didn't arise. But these are features that could prove essential or even lifesaving in a survuval situation. And that is afterall what the ESEE 5 was designed for. With that said... The ESEE 5 came with a shaving sharp blade that remained so even after field dressing AND skinning two whitetail deer. After skinning the second deer I polished up the edge a bit with my Work Sharp KTS and the blade was ready to shave again. I found the handle shape/size and balance of the ESEE 5 to work well for me and the knife fit snugly and securely in one of my Spec-Ops Combat Master (short) sheaths. I guess the only reservation I have (hence the 4star rating instead of 5 stars) is the weight of the knife. At one pound even, sans sheath, the ESEE 5 is a handful and then some. It's heft is almost hatchet-like and probably a bit heavy for EDC. But again this knife was designed for extreme survival situations and chopping tree limbs is one of the tasks that the folks at Randall's Adventure Training envisioned for it. Would the ESEE 5 be my choice for an EDC knife? Probably not. Would I feel confident carrying it on a backcountry expedition knowing I could count on it to do the work of a knife and hatchet?
