Product Description
Designed by renowned custom knifemaker Ed Schempp, the Schempp Rock is a purpose-designed InchescampInches knife that combines highly evolved ergonomics, exceptional edge geometry, and light weight to yield an incredibly easy to use tool. The Schempp Rock is, to a degree, an evolution of an earlier Spyderco model called the Rock Salt. A member of our unique Salt line, the Rock Salt was hollow ground from H-1 steel'an extraordinary nitrogen-based steel that is completely impervious to rust. Owners of the original Rock Salt loved them and many of these knives still serve as trusted tools around the globe. However, the additional cost of manufacturing them from H-1 steel put them out of the price range of some potential users. Spyderco therefore decided to produce the design with VG-10 stainless steel, a material that offers exceptional cutting performance, toughness, and corrosion resistance at a more affordable price. Like Ed Schempp's original handmade prototype, the Schempp Rock features a skeletonized flat grind that tapers uniformly from the spine to the cutting edge. This creates a superior balance of strength, mass, and an acute edge geometry that gives the Schempp Rock extreme cutting performance for its size and weight. One of the most distinctive characteristics of the Schempp Rock is its unique dropped-handle design. The angle between the handle and the blade allows the user's hand to maintain a strong, natural wrist angle and lowers the blade and cutting edge in relationship to the line of the forearm. This provides enhanced control during cutting, reduces fatigue, and transfers energy more efficiently during chopping motions. The handle features full-tang construction for strength and textured, injection-molded, fiberglass-reinforced-nylon handle scales for a secure, comfortable grip.Spyderco Schemp Rock FRN Vg-10 Plain Edge Knife, Black Review
My knife arrived in great shape and the picture doesn't do its size or quality justice. VG 10 steel is not an inexpensive steel and its composition makes it one of the more elite steels and a good compromise between price/performance. You can expect a hair cutting razor edge that will out last 90% of the knives people like to think are good quality, the only way to get a better blade is to spend more and get a better steel and that's a pretty short list since this is definitely in the upper crust. Now for functionality: This knife is advertised as a thin camp knife good for all general cutting purposes.... I disagree; the shape of the curved handle would make this a difficult knife to use for any sort of cooking as the blade will not easily lay flat from any sort of natural handhold... The point of the blade seems to want to seek a raised position that is comfortably in line with the thumb and yet appears aggressive and speaks (to me at least) of a intent to be a unconventional fighting knife.
Certainly you could chop with the blade and the profile suggest that it would make deep cuts into smaller diameter wood and cleave steaks like a hot knife through butter. For myself I can't see spending this kind of money to buy a camp knife when so many good and less expensive lesser designs are out there that will do the job, it seems silly. Short of setting up your own smithy and hand forging your own blade you're not likely to find many fixed blades made out of VG 10 that have this blade length or such a wide blade profile.
As a fighting knife (as a soldier I carried a Gerber MK II for many, many years) I've got to say the handle fits like it was custom made for my hand and it would make a natural slashing weapon, the point rising in line with the thumb results in the tip pointing aggressively at anything in front of you. The case of the knife requires a little effort to lock the blade in place or release the blade but once its locked in I cannot see any situation in which it would fall out on its own, you may need to push a little harder than expected to lock it in.... The case itself would make carrying the knife a very close to the body affair and can be used to carry the knife in at least five different positions.
In my opinion this is a street knife or a combat knife made to be carried steathily with occasional uses at a campsite. The thin profile of the knife and the overall design and quality set it apart from anything else Ive personally seen.
If you want a knife for the usual camp chores this is serious overkill and not that handy for any sort of cooking.. If you want a knife made for self defense or military use it would be hard to imagine a finer blade. (Be sure to know the laws for your state and local area prior to carrying in public)
I would have given this knife 5 stars but since it is advertised as a camp knife and I dont feel it is a great knife for a lot of camp chores I gave it 4 stars, as a fighting blade it is 5 stars, in my opinion.
