Benchmade 8600BK Bedlam Knife Review

As this review is being created in early December 2012, I am floored that there are no other reviews on the Benchmade Bedlam, auto or manual versions. When the knife was new, as soon as I saw it advertised in _American Handgunner_, I placed an order for it. I am a sucker for Persian-style blades, so that would explain my immediate enthusiasm for the Bedlam. Regardless, this is a finely produced knife for those that also favor the beauty and function of an upswept, clip-point blade.

I purchased the Bedlam 8600BK, which is the automatic version of the plain edge blade. I have not had access to the manual version, so, those that cannot legally possess the automatic version should take this into account.

I'll focus on the positives first. This is a very pocketable, portable knife, but by no means is it a gentleman's folder, nominally because it has a pocket clip, it does not have exotic materials in its manufacture, and it is on the large size. Fit and finish is top-notch for a production folder, and lockup is superb, with no movement of the extended blade. The G10-scaled handle is in excess of 5 � inches and quite smooth despite the striated texturing; I could not find any "hot spots" except perhaps around the pocket clip, which is de rigueur on any folder with a clip, but I also have not had an issue with a secure grip in wet or fast situations. The clip itself is easy to secure in all my pockets, which included Levi's jeans and cargo shorts (thicker material), Champion athletic shorts (very thin material), Carhartt work- and casual pants, and Vertyx tactical pants. The blade arrived shaving-sharp from the factory, which is no surprise for a Benchmade, and it has maintained its sharp edge for over the year that I have carried it, partially attributable to the 154CM steel and Benchmade's edge geometry and partially due to my limited application of the blade; I have not thrust it through steel, Kevlar, or bad guys, nor have I used it to baton or chop wood. The Axis lock is easy to activate with my thumb, not so much with my index finger, although a quick flick of the wrist adds the appropriate centrifugal force needed to completely open the knife, and, for the practiced, simultaneous use of both the index finger and thumb has always given me positive opening. The blade itself has a wickedly beautiful profile, and the 4-6/16" edge is an advantage of the upswept, Persian-style blade. There is a small bit of jimping to the last 14 mm of the blade's spine, adequate for additional thumb support and control for fine work. There is an extended, pointed butt suitable enough for breaking glass; although I have never in my career in law enforcement needed to do so, it's comforting that the Bedlam can function in this capacity. The safety/lock is easy to activate once I got used to it: push down and forward or back with the thumb; activated in the closed position, the safety will retard the use of the knife against the carrier in the case of a knife-snatching, affording one enough time to either create time and distance from the goblin or transfer to another force option.

It isn't a perfect folder, of course. The Bedlam is on the large size for a folder, and the four-inch blade is an issue in the auto version. I like large folders, so I don't have an issue with the Bedlam, but I also regularly carry a Cold Steel Spartan, a Spyderco Vallotton Sub-Hilt, and a Grayman Knives Satu. The Bedlam is over 9-3/4 inches opened, so it has a sizeable presence when employed, with nothing subtle about it. Regardless of the edge choice (single or combo), the 8600 also only comes with a black-finished blade.

Because of the size of the blade, deploying it to the locked position by activating the Axis automatic opener with only the index finger with the blade in a raised, upwardly-pointed direction has only been successful for me 10% of the time; with the blade pointed downward, I can use my index finger on the Axis lock to open it to the locked position 100% of the time, although not always followed by the feedback of an audible snap. Using both index finger and thumb on the Axis lock button yields a full lock 100% of the time regardless of the positioning of the blade. This technique needs to be practiced by those that are used to opening a folder with only the thumb. The automatic opening is slowed by the blade mass, but it is a very quiet action, especially compared to my other autos. In retrospect, I am quicker in opening a manual folder than an automatic, so I do not necessarily consider an automatic knife advantageous. For those in military and law enforcement, where weapon retention is an issue, an automatic knife with a safety lock certainly has a tactical benefit.

The Benchmade Bedlam 8600BK is a smooth, stylish, function automatic folder. For those who do not want or cannot carry an automatic knife but still want the advantages of a Persian-style blade, there is the 860, with a satin or black-coated finish. It is definitely a folder with a presence, living up to the high expectations mandated by a Benchmade product.
