Benchmade Pardue Design Axis ComboEdge Griptilian Drop-Point with X15 T.N. Corrosion-Resistant Steel and Textured Orange Handle Review

I bought this to "replace" a 53S Tanto Griptilian Combo Edge Knife (which I loved.) Thankfully, and due to some karmic principle of the universe, the old knife resurfaced the very same day this was delivered. I feel like I got a two-fer!

I love the handle and the weight. Although made of different steel, my kitchen scale wasn't sophisticated enough to tell a weight difference between the two knives. Locking mechanism feels a little stiff but my sense is that will work it self out.

You can move the pocket clip to either side but in reading the manual (a knife with a manual?) it appears that the knife comes ready to be worn in the right pocket. I've been wearing the other knife in the same configuration in my LEFT pocket for two+ years without knowledge or incident. I'm sure now that I'm aware it's set up for the right pocket and not the left, I'll cut my finger off somehow. The screws to remove and change the clip are easily accessible. You probably wont need a rotohammer to get them out. That said, on further inspection, it looks like you'd need the special Benchmade tool set to do it (again with the manual.)

I did some research in some knife forums and found that the X15 steel is a change for Benchmade. They used another grade of steel in this "marine" grade blade in the past. There's some dispute about which was better but it appears they did it because this steel holds an edge longer. I do have the idea from the cursory research that this blade doesn't hold an edge quite as well as their normal steel but it's virtually indestructible. Seemed like quite a few of the folks talking about these things used them as dive knives. I'm a little concerned about the edge issue but I'm more concerned about flat out durability which is why I bought this knife.

I've carried a knife of nearly the exact same form factor for 2+ years and have zero complaints. It's my "daily driver." I dont take it to the airport but pretty much everywhere else and even in a suit several times a month. I've seen Benchmades with a smoother handle but I appreciate a little more heft and grip in exchange for a slimmer, smoother body.

I also found in my poking around on the web that people "customize" these Griptillians more than people used to do with a '57 Chevy. It's pretty impressive.

My sense is that, for the money, this is a great knife and if I could rationalize buying more, I would :) Unfortunately, one knife sorta does the trick for me.
